I read Freedom a number of years ago. Or rather, I tried to read it I got better than half-way through and it was drudgery so I skipped to the end and basically DNFd. I hated especially how he wrote women. Now, I may be a different reader now than I was then, maybe his writing would hit me different, but at the same token, I don't want to give up my precious reading time on Franzen.
That said...I may join the Zoom just to hear the spicy takes!!
I looooooved Freedom! And I had conflicted feelings loving it because I know we're supposed to hate Franzen (as women, as readers, as intellectuals). I am so curious to see how I'll feel about The Corrections after all this time.
I can’t wait to hear the discussion about this book! I have about 100 pages left. I’ve been reading all day so I can finish it before tomorrow night. I’ll need some time to sit with it before the meeting so I hope to finish it tonight. Really looking forward to everyone’s thoughts.
I'm listening on audio (which is my preferred method of reading when I think I might struggle to get through it 😂) and I do think that is helping, for what it's worth. I'm not necessarily struggling, but I could see myself not wanting to keep picking this one up if I had to sit down and read it. Listening as I do other things keeps the momentum going!
Yes! Definitely struggling with this one. It's so wordy and so far I can't find a character to like. I'm almost 1/2 way through and trying to convince myself to keep going.
Me too. I’m kind of skimming through it and reading parts that may be interesting but I think this book is too long with content that could be left out. I’m into the 300s so I’ll probably keep skimming through it to the end
Been on my TBR for a long time, really excited to be reading it with y'all. I am about 130 pages in and I like it! Controversial? We need a little controversy now and then to challenge us!
I think I read this back when it was new- way before I started tracking in Goodreads. We'll see if anything seems familiar! (Doubtful tbh- how can it be 20+ years ago?!)
I read it the year it was released (or soon after) and I could not tell you one single thing that it is about. Very curious if my brain/heart will perk up when I start rereading.

We are always good for the spicy takes, Dee!

looking forward to this ... Have read a couple others of his but not this one...
I’m on page 220 and I’m just not sure I can continue. Is anyone else struggling with this one?

Ha! When it's controversial to love the book club pick!! 😂 (I already can't wait for this discussion)
